How to build a strong business foundation

January 08, 20242 min read

As small creative business owners we are typically the sole driving force behind our businesses.

Any initial success that we have is often built on pure passion and drive but when it comes to creating long term sustainable business success you need to have built a robust foundation for your business, so that if and when you choose to step back for a bit you can.

Today we are going to examine the three keys to business development and how you can put the right bricks in place to build a solid foundation for your business.

There are three main areas of business development:

1/ Innovation

Innovation should not be confused with creativity, which is the expression of ideas. Innovation is taking these ideas and putting them into action. You can be full of the best ideas but if you don’t make the time to act on them and see them through then you will find your business growth stalling.

Often business owners spend a lot of time on this at the beginning of their business but then it drops off and for a truly successful company you should always continue to innovate throughout the lifespan of your business.

2/ Quantification

Quantification refers to the numbers. This is closely linked to those ideas that you have innovated on. The best way to gauge this is through your customer response - are people giving you positive feedback on your offers/ products? What is proving to be popular and how can you continue to build on that and replicate it?

If you’re mainly seeing negative feedback then it’s important to listen to that carefully and see what it is you’re doing wrong, and fix it. This will ensure that you keep growing and evolving with the needs of your customers and the overall business climate.

3/ Orchestration

Once you’ve had a chance to find what areas of your business are working to generate success, you can zero in on those areas and concentrate on making them the stand out ideas. You pivot your focus here to get the most out of your business and to meet the needs of your customers.

By focusing on these three things you can really start to build the proper foundations for your business.
